Pregnancy Fitness: Exercises to Enhance Your Well-being and Prepare for Birth

Exercising during pregnancy offers numerous benefits for expectant mothers. At Indira IVF, we encourage regular exercise for pregnant women as it helps maintain fitness, alleviate low back pain, manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, reduce stress, and aid in postpartum recovery.

For those who've been exercising before pregnancy, maintaining a workout routine is encouraged. However, it's important to avoid immediate exercise after meals, exercise alone, and opt for loose clothing instead of tight ones. Also, avoid exercises involving prolonged lying on the back or balancing the body.

For those new to exercise, starting slowly with 20-30 minutes of pregnancy exercises per day is advisable. However, if any discomfort arises during or after exercise, consulting a doctor is recommended.

In terms of specific exercises:

First Trimester:

  • Pelvic curl enhances spinal mobility and strengthens the abdominal muscles to support the growing belly.

  • Pelvic braces are beneficial unless accompanied by pain during intercourse or urinary urgency.

  • Kneeling push-ups engage core and upper body strengthening.

  • Squats strengthen lower body muscles like quads, glutes, and hamstrings.

  • Bicep curls can be continued throughout all trimesters for arm strength.

Second Trimester:

  • Focus on developing a stretching routine for hip flexors, quadriceps, low back, glutes, and calves due to postural changes.

  • Incline push-ups are beneficial for upper body strength.

  • Side-lying leg lifts work on balance and pelvic stabilization.

  • Introduce mermaid stretches during this period.

Third Trimester:

  • Avoid exercises that might risk balance loss.

  • Opt for low-impact cardiovascular activities such as walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, Pilates, pelvic floor exercises, and bodyweight movements.

Staying active during pregnancy benefits both mother and baby. It's essential to pay attention to your body's signals and discontinue exercise if discomfort arises. Regular communication with your doctor regarding concerns and observations is crucial for a healthy pregnancy.
